The new Scorpion MTB overturn current paradigms by offering a high-performance tire for every single terrain consistency, with different developments for each riding style. The innovative SmartGrip Compound, the technological heart of the new tires, guarantees mechanical resistance and grip on dry or wet terrain.
Pirelli's off-road tire is called, not by chance, Scorpion MTB (the company's trademark). Just as with the PZero Velo, the road tires that marked Pirelli's return to cycling, a meaningful name was chosen for the MTB tires as well. The Scorpion are, in fact, the historic Motocross tires of Pirelli, with which the company has won over 70 MX world titles. Like all Pirelli bike tires, the new MTB tire range was developed at Pirelli's innovation center, the R&D labs in Milan Bicocca: the main among Pirelli's 11 research centers worldwide, which with over 1000 dedicated researchers, allocates about 200 million euros annually for tire development and innovation. The SmartGrip Compound, the core of the new tires, was produced in Pirelli's Racing plants, where the compounds for the famous F1 tires are also engineered.
Each size has its dedicated development
The extensive experience gained by Pirelli over years of presence in Motocross has been put to good use, particularly in defining the tread patterns of the Scorpion MTB range: the shape and height of the knobs, spacing, cross-link, and angles have been studied for maximum footprint efficiency on the specific surfaces you ride on. When designing the new tires based on terrain consistency, Pirelli's engineers also had to consider many other variables: from the rider's style to the latest developments in rim profiles and sizes. For this reason, the construction technology in the new Scorpion MTB tires is not the same for all tire sizes: each size benefits from dedicated development. The combination and interaction of structures, reinforcements, static and dynamic properties of the compound, sizes, and different tread patterns for various terrains have been a technical innovation area for Pirelli in terms of product development approach. True to Pirelli's DNA, which develops all its products focusing on the specific needs of the consumer, the Scorpion MTB range allows the rider to freely choose the size that best suits their riding style without fearing compromises on performance.
Features
- The Scorpion M (Mixed Terrain - yellow) are ideal on mixed terrains, where changes can be unpredictable or sudden, from hard-pack to sand, stones, and roots.
- Lite: this is the lighter Mixed version with even lower rolling resistance.
- Grip: SmartGrip Compound for uncompromising grip on dry and wet surfaces.
- Handling: a model designed to be compatible with modern wide-profile rims.
- Damping: Tubeless ready 120 Tpi casing for greater stability and grip with a modern low-pressure riding style.
- Protection: tear-resistant compound that offers superior puncture resistance and balanced protection without compromising performance.
Technology
SmartGrip Compound: dry and wet grip without loss of performance
The heart of Pirelli MTB tire technology is the innovative SmartGrip Compound. Thanks to this specific compound, the "weather" variable does not affect the performance of the new tires, which have been designed to offer grip and handling in any weather condition. Just as it was for SmartNettm Silica, which solved the compromise between rolling resistance and wet grip of the PZero Velo road tires, so it is for the SmartGrip Compound, which in the Scorpion MTB closes the gap between tear resistance and grip on wet surfaces.
